First Aid at Work Provision
The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to enable first aid to be given to employees should they be injured or become ill at work. These regulations apply to all workplaces including those with five or fewer employees and the self employed.
First Aid at Work Courses across Newcastle and the North
The first aid courses that we offer are ideal for a range of workplace requirements. Our courses give employees the essential knowledge and skills to provide effective first aid in the workplace. The courses we provide are ideal for lone workers, employees in lower risk organisations or individuals who need solid grounding in basic first aid. The first aid at work training we provide will give a good insight into first aid procedures and skills. It will also provide hands-on practical exercises to help the delegates to learn basic life support skills as well as giving them the confidence to cope in an emergency.
At Inspirational Training, the courses we provide across Newcastle are lifesaving first aid courses, providing participants with essential emergency techniques. The courses are Ofqual and SQA regulated through ITC First. There’s no requirement for a due diligence check - our team are competent to deliver first aid qualifications.
Emergency First Aid at Work
On completion of the Emergency First Aid at Work courses we provide at Inspirational Training, delegates should be able to understand the role of the first aider, including…
The importance of preventing cross infection.
The need to record incidents and accidents.
Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency.
Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizures).
Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking.
Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding.
Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock.
Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters).
First Aid at Work 3 day course
The first six hours of course content include the above and the next 12 hours include…
Administer first aid to a casualty with:
Injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries.
Head injury
Chest injuries.
Burns and scalds.
Eye injuries.
Sudden poisoning.
Anaphylactic shock.
Recognise the presence of major illness and provide appropriate first aid (including heart attack, stroke, asthma, diabetes).
Qualifications for HSE Regulatory Compliance
It’s vital that employers provide first aid care on their premises for staff and they also have a duty of care towards all visitors and users of their facilities.
Which First Aid course do I or my staff need?
HSE recommends that all businesses have a First Aider on site; detailed requirements will depend on your business size and what you do.
How does the employer know which course their staff require?
Employers are required to undertake risk assessments of the workplace, as well as decide which course to take. For more information, click here.
For many businesses there is a choice of two courses:
Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)
For those employees in low risk workplaces e.g. offices, shops and call centres. This is a 6 hour (1-day) award. See our course dates below.
First Aid at Work (FAW)
For more remote or hazardous environments e.g. light industry, construction, food processing. This is an 18-hour (3-day) award. See our course dates below.
Additionally, all employers are 'highly recommended', by the Health and Safety Executive, to give their staff responsible for first aid an annual 3-hour refresher training.
As a result of your risk assessment you may decide it would be more appropriate that your staff undertake one of our environment specific first aid training courses because of legislation relating to your work sector or specific environment, e.g. Outdoor, Sports, or Paediatric first aid training.
Some of our sector specific first aid courses have dual certification, e.g. our ITC Certificate in Outdoor First Aid course and our Emergency First Aid for Sport and Exercise course include an Emergency First Aid at Work certificate. First Aid at Work Requalification
With the First Aid at Work qualification there is a requirement to be retrained every 3 years, however this 'Refresher' training course can be for 12-hours as long as it is within 3 years and 1 calendar month of your previous certificate end date.
Basic Skills Refresher
Additionally the Health and Safety Executive 'highly recommend' that first aiders undergo an annual 3-hour refresher course.
