Outdoor First Aid

Our ITC Outdoor First Aid courses validate your ML, SPA, CWI, MIA, MIC, BCU, RYA, BOF, Cycle and Mountain Bike Instructor, BASI, Ski and Snowboard Leader, Cave and Mine Leader qualifications or any other coaching or instructing qualifications that require a First Aid certificate.

It is the course of choice for many outdoor practitioners.

The course is also suitable for anyone working or playing in the outdoors, such as walkers, climbers, cyclists, paddlers, golfers, anglers, school party leaders, Scout Leaders, D of E trainers and participants, forestry, agriculture and construction workers, etc.

The course is designed so that participants follow systematic, straightforward training programmes. First Aid is a practical subject and practical, hands-on training techniques are the hallmark of our courses. Candidates manage simulated incidents on the training courses, making real decisions and feeling real emotions.

ITC Certificate in Outdoor First Aid - 16+ hours (SCQF)

This course is recognised throughout the UK and was the first Outdoor First Aid qualification to be externally regulated and meet the standards to appear on a national qualifications framework.

This course covers the syllabus for Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW); therefore a workplace recognised EFAW Certificate is issued in addition to the Outdoor First Aid Certificate.

The course focuses on managing incidents both on-site and away from your base, and course content includes:

Assessment of casualty
Accident procedure
Bleeding and shock
CPR (for Cardiac Arrest and Drowning)
Using a Defibrillator
Treatment of sprains and strains
Fractures and injury
Head and torso injury and treatment
Medical emergencies
Hypo- and hyperthermia
Bites and stings
Triage
Incident management
Practical scenarios indoors and outdoors
What do I do if I am remote?

Outdoor First Aid Emergency Action (1 day course)

This course covers the essentials of managing immediate, potentially life threatening incidents in a systematic manner. Ideal for anyone who may be required to take charge at an incident. This 1-day (8-hour) course is suitable for some Outdoor Instructor awards, including Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI), British Cycling and Royal Yachting Association qualifications. Forest School First Aid - 2 Days (ITC)

The Forest School First Aid course is designed to meet the specific needs of Forest Schools Practitioners. Forest Schools Practitioners are required to hold an appropriate first aid certificate which has additional elements of outdoor and paediatric first aid. This course covers child and adult first aid.

This is a bespoke course. In addition to adult first aid it includes child related issues, including child CPR and use of a defibrillator, child choking and common illnesses including asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and anaphylaxis. The essential infant first aid content is also covered to enable an Ofsted/EYFS recognised Level 3 Certificate in Paediatric First Aid (12+ hours) to be awarded.

The course is 16 hours so therefore satisfies the requirements of all other outdoor national governing bodies, and is also suitable for bushcraft first aid, survival first aid, woodland first aid, wilderness first aid, Scout and Duke of Edinburgh Award leaders, etc.

Outdoor and Paediatric First Aid (16 hours)

This course covers all the same content as the Level 3 award in Paediatric First Aid, but looks at this and additional content, including adult CPR, in an outdoor context. This course is suitable for anybody who takes children out of the classroom, satisfies Ofsted/EYFS and validates Forest School and other outdoor teaching/coaching qualifications.

Successful participants of this course receive two certificates:

Outdoor and Paediatric First Aid (16 hours)

and

ITC Level 3 Certificate in Paediatric First Aid (12+ hours).

As part of these courses will normally take place outdoors, ensure you bring clothing appropriate to the weather conditions.

Forestry '+F'

Recent changes to Forestry Commission policy recommend those who work in the Forestry industry attend training which includes additional topics relevant to the risks and nature or their work.

In addition to the content of an Emergency First Aid at Work course, the Forestry Commission recommend topics including:

Severe bleeding (i.e. chainsaw injury)
Crush injury
Hypothermia
Lyme Disease

Our EFAW + F course covers this additional content and results in two certificates: an HSE recognised Emergency First Aid at Work certificate and an EFAW + F certificate, which will satisfy the Forestry Commissions' and others' requirements.

If your First Aid Needs Analysis suggests more training beyond EFAW+F due to the remote nature of your work, we would recommend either a 3 day First Aid at Work+F course or the 2 Day Outdoor First Aid course, designed specifically for those who work in remote or higher hazard outdoor environments.
